The Campaign to Protect Rural England is a national charity which helps people to protect the countryside where there is threat, to enhance it where there is opportunity, and to keep it beautiful, productive and enjoyable for everyone. Formed in 1926, it works for a beautiful and living countryside on behalf of present and future generations, and for the more sustainable use of land and other resources in town and country. The South Downs Joint Committee works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that the qualities that make the Sussex Downs and East Hampshire Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty special and distinctive, are valued in any decision-making which may affect its character. The South Downs Campaign is a grouping of organisations which are working together to secure the establishment of a South Downs National Park, with the powers and funding to ensure the proper protection and enhancement of the area included in the Park for future generations. The South Downs CVS is carrying out a market town health check on Lewes, which gives our local community a chance to tell us what you like, love and hate about living in Lewes. The health check will lead to new project ideas for Lewes which can bring in new funding streams that the town is currently not benefiting from. The Lewes Footpaths Group is a walking group that arranges a regular programme of walks, social events and holidays for members. It also produces books of walks in the local area. Its web site is at www.lewesfootpathsgroup.org.uk.

ESCIS stands for East Sussex Community Information Service. It is a computer database of local and community information developed and managed by the Libraries, Information and Arts service of East Sussex County Council. Its web site is at www.escis.org.uk.

The Federation of Sussex Amenity Societies is an umbrella organisation to give active support and coordinate the work of member societies in conservation and environmental matters throughout East and West Sussex.
